I bought this to replace my 2 year old Yamaha RXV-2600.
Pros:Excellent surround sound performance thanks to Audessy auto setup, perfect HDMI switching performance, great value
Cons:Muting the sound makes a noticeable "click" sound as the amps are turned off, cryptic manual, lack of THX certification
Despite a couple of minor cons, this is a fantastic receiver.It blows away my older (but much more expensive) Yamaha in terms of sound quality and HDMI switching.The Yamaha YPAO wouldn't automatically calibrate my subwoofer (but Audessy does!) and would give HDMI HDCP errors about every other time I turned on the receiver.The Denon has been working flawlessly for a week.
I would recommend going online and downloading some of the Denon setup guides from avsforum, they are *much* better than the weak excuse of a manual that comes in the box with the receiver.
Highly recommended for an entry level 7.1 receiver!
The Denon AVR790 replaced my 11 yr. old HTR-5230 Yamaha home theater AV and has relegated a 4 yr. old Sony home theater system to our bedroom. I bought the Denom AVR790 unit because I had heard how good Denon AV units are. Here is what my experience has been so far.
SOUND Pros: 1) The sound you hear is only as good as your speakers. My initial Denon/speakers hookup was done using my old Yamaha speakers and subwoofer while I waited for my new speakers to arrive. The sound was good but not exciting. When my Jamo 401s and center speakers arrived they were immediately installed (fronts & center). The sound quality change was remarkably good. The same happened when my Polk Monitor 30s arrived. However, the Polk speakers turned out to be in a class by themselves and the Jamo 401s were relegated to the surround position in a 5:1 configuration. 2) Audyssey MultEQ works very well. It made setting up my new surround speakers and new subwoofer a snap. I used the manual (read it 2xs) and Batpig (also read it 2xs) with few perceived setup problems.
SOUND Cons: 1) Zone 2 has been a problem from the start. I'm not sure if it's the receiver, the setup (me), or the speakers. When I set up in 7:1 the Front Height speakers have next to no volume and they blank out (signal loss?). 2) Even though I have Audyssey Dynamic EQ activated it doesn't seem to work. I still get volume swing between shows and commercials.
VIDEO Pros: 1) The picture is excellent due to my blue-ray player chip set and the Denon Anchor Bay chip set.
VIDIO Cons: 1) Every-so-often the picture will quickly jump back-and-forth from full screen to what looks like the 4:3 setting. This may be a TV channel issue.
SUMMARY: For the money I feel I got a great deal. Great sound and an excellent picture. Maybe I can wait another 11 years before I decide to replace this setup!! Remember to READ THE MANUAL and get on line and get a copy of BATPIG'S "DENON-TO-ENGLISH DICTOINARY". Setup will be so much easier. Even though the remote seems intimidating, it's not it takes time to get used to it.
2-11-2013: Just an update about the Denon system that I put together and the speakers that I "side-lined". 1. I got Zone 2 working with a set of very old Altec Lansing "bookself" speakers. The speakers sounded old and tired (very little highs, some midrange, and a flabby bass). I had the retired Jamo c401 speaker pair in a box being readied to sell. So, I decided to replace the Altecs with the Jamo speakers and was again, mildly disappointed. Why? Because they were, for my taste, too bright and offered very little mid range sound. I wondered if I should try to hook/wire the two very different speakers together in either a series or parallel setup? I have never done that so I went online to see if there could be a problem....and there was. The Jamo speakers are 6 ohm speakers and the Altecs are 8 ohm. Since the Denon receiver is rated 90 watts @ 8 ohms and 125 watts @ 6 ohms I could not wire the speakers in parallel. Rule of thumb for resistance in a parallel circuit; resistance of the total circuit (includes the mini amp, located in the Denon receiver, and a one Jamo and one Altec speaker) is always less than the smallest resistance (6 ohms) in the circuit. The total resistance for a parallel circuit using 6 and 8 ohm speakers is 3.43 ohms. That would burn out the mini amps or the speakers that the 2 speaker circuits (channels) in Zone 2 would be using if volume was pushed too high. I wired them in series, turned on the receiver and CD player and was stunned by the quality of the sound the series wired speakers were producing. The highs were clear and pleasing while the mids and bass had seperation and sounded great. Saved me alot of money because my wife and I listen to music in front of the fireplace. I was ready to get 2 floorstanding Polk speakers for Zone 2.
2. I also replaced the Jamo c400cen center channel speaker with a Polk cs-1 center channel speaker. I was pleased with the overall result but, it was not as spectacular as replacing the Jamo c401 speaker pair with Polk Monitor 30s. I decided to wire the center channel speakers in series and I am glad I did. The results were similar to the Zone 2 outcome.
3. My Denon avr-790 system now includes the following: The receiver is set to support a 5.1 surround system that includes 2 Polk Monitor 30 speakers in surround, 2 Polk Monitor 40 speakers in the front, a Polk PSW-10 sub, and a Polk CS-1 center speaker wired in series with a Jamo c400cen center speaker. Zone 2 includes 2 Altec Lansing "bookshelf" speakers each wired in series with a Jamo c401 speaker. A 40" Toshiba REGZA 40XV645U flat screen LCD TV. I'm presently using a DMP-BDT210 Panasonic Blu-Ray Disk Player. I have an old CDC-565 Yamaha 5-disk platter CD player. I have a real 'blast-from-the-past' Bang & Olufsen BEOGRAM RX-2 turntable for 33s

This is a great reciever no matter how you slice it.The sound quality is very good and the Audessy auto set-up is awesome.The only issue I had was an HDMI communication problem with my Blu Ray player, but it was resolved by switching from HDMI 2 to HDMI 1 input, and everything works great now.The Dolby Digital True HD sound is really amazing, when you see that blue light glow on the Denon, you know you are in for some killer sound!Get some good quality speakers so you can hear all the great details the Denon is giving them.Granted, the on-screen display is like playing pong (old video game reference :) ) but then again, you only need to use it when setting up or changing major settings.The manual can be difficult to understand, but just be patient and read it twice if needed, you will figure it out.For the price, the AVR-790 cannot be beat for sound quality and features.FYI, the AVR-790 is identical to the Denon AVR-1910, except for an A/B speaker switch for the mail left and right speakers.This is only needed if you have two sets of main front speakers, one set for music, and one for home theater.If you plan on running one set of speakers for music and movies, like most people will, the buy the AVR-790 for $50 less than the AVR-1910!!!

My favorite part is definitely the HDMI pass-through.It's the only name-brand receiver in this price range that I'm aware of to have this feature.With TV, I only use the receiver when watching movies, sports or special events so this feature allowed the TV speaker to be used when the receiver is not turned on.
The remote is weird and not very user friendly.The rudimentary graphic of the on-screen menu reminds me of the old Atari 2600 but only worse.
Overall I'm quite happy, as I was able to buy this receiver and the iPod dock for under $500 total.
This is an awesome receiver. The manual leaves a great deal to be desired. Very hard to follow and not great at explaining what the option really does. Its says what it is, but not what it really does. Aside from that, The included microphone makes setup a breeze. NOTE: must do setup first. The unit will not function out of the box properly. Thought the center speaker was dead as it was a new Polk set. Just do the setup and all will be perfect.

When I purchased this receiver in 2010 I was looking for one that could provide me with a home theater experience along with SACD and DVD-Audio playability. This Denon has done very well with those requirements.
There is a lot to learn with this receiver. It is feature packed and you will need to wade through the 8-1/2' by 11-1/2" owner's manual consisting of64 pages. There is a lot of cross referencing using page numbers so you can easily find what you are looking for. The manual is well laid out with the following headings: The MANUAL ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- - Getting Started - Connections - Settings - Playback - Checking the Status (Information) - Convenient Functions - Playing 2-channel Sound in Zone2 (Multi-zone Function) - Operating the Connected Devices by Remote Control Unit - Other Information [Explains the types of Surround there are and the Audyssey program.] - Troubleshooting - Specifications - List of Preset Codes [For the Remote] -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I suggest you go through the manual once and then pick what you want to set up and follow the instructions to tweak your listening experience. The AVR1920 out of the box sounds terrific but you may want to fiddle with the settings to obtain the maximum from your system. OR...
One setting you may want to start with is the 'Audyssey Auto Setup'. This procedure will assess the acoustic characteristics of your speakers and the listening room then optimum settings are made automatically by the program. This program helps take the guess work out of the tweaking.
The remote control is a beast unto itself. Turn the normal looking remote over and there is a door on the back. Inside the door is more buttons for more sound enhancements.
On the front of the remote some of the buttons you may use on a regular basis are the Power button, Master Volume control and Source Select. Your programming buttons are on the front with cursor controls, Enter and Return buttons.
The back of the remote has the Surround Mode buttons, another set of Source Select buttons and your selection of 3 types of Equalizers.
On the front panel there is a headphone jack and the usual display info with a Dimmer button for the display. I like the Dimmer button option a lot. There is also a Status button that provides you with the current settings of your receiver dependent upon the source being used.
You can view all the back panel inputs and outputs on this web site or go to Denon's web site and down load their product manual. Amazon and Denon have done a nice job on the info available for this product.
If you want well balanced clear sound whether it be for a movie or music this is a wonderful unit to own and operate. It does take some familiarity, but like a lot of good things, it is worth the wait. It is versatile and powerful with 90 watts at 8 ohms, or 125 watts at 6 ohm, and will enhance your listening pleasures.
After 3 years, a lot of films, TV, and music this receiver is still going strong and without any problems.
I bought this from Amazon on June 2nd and after several days of frustration I am beginning to learn how to put some of it's power to use.The instruction manual is the absolute worst nightmare of communication I have ever encountered and I am not an illiterate dolt.The best approach is to conduct a series of scientific experiments on it and eventually begin to learn through trial and error how it works.I begin with some excellent news, the automatic sound equilization process is fully programmed and the moment you plug in the microphone the computer program takes over and you do what it says.The mic has conveniently a camera tripod screw thread on the bottom so I used my tripod to place the mic at various locations suggested.There are six locations and at each one a series of chirps (not loud) were delivered in turn from each speaker.It wasn't til I was done that I realized the panel display does not show everything shown on the TV screen (IF you have HDMI which I do not).The truncated display confused me at one step so be careful!It did not take very long and the speakers were measured and equalization set.The process discovered a reversed phase in the wiring of one speaker and let me correct it.Later, after fussing with a way to hook up 2 channel analog input from a CD player, I listened to a favorite CD (The Verdi Requiem) and was shocked at how much better it sounded than I have ever heard except at a live concert.The speakers in my room simply disappeared and a wall of rich and full range accurate sound flooded forward to engulf my eager ears.At that moment I knew I had made a good decision. The surround sound choice that sounded best to me was called "rock arena" (odd).The bad news is that I still do not understand how to configure this monster.I am almost helplessly sticking with wiring it up to the default settings which is very hard for someone with too many old composite video signal sources and analog audio inputs.The manual is 60 some pages of random scratchings that I cannot understand (despite a career as a mainframe computer systems manager and physics professor).Seriously Denon could significantly increase their sales with a well designed manual, my checking of other manufacturers indicated that none of them know how to explain anything to anyone!The next bit of good news was the FM receiver.I have a favorite FM station that came in on my old Harmon Kardon with some background hiss and scratchy static beacause of a weak signal.The Denon picked that station up loud and clear and solid as a tank!Now if I can only figure out how to save it as a preset!Yes, it's that hard to do!The Denon has mysterious behaviors determined programmatically and figuring that out requires searching through each word on each page for hours and hours - I'm still not there yet.Will offer an update to this review in a year when I finally understand this mess.Meanwhile it sure sounds great!
Addendum:One year later - the sound just quit!Tech support claimed there was likely some dust in the headphone input that fools the receiver into thinking headphones are plugged in hence the speakers are shut down.I cleaned the jack but no dice and the headphone jack does not work either.I tried the suggested "reboot" (a technique that resets the microchip to default factory settings - no dice!I am beginning to fear the unit is FRIED!I will post more news later as this problem works forward (July 2011)
I recently bought this AVR and I'm very happy with it. I've tried Sony, Yamaha and Onkyo HTiBs (each bigger than the prior, in that order), then I finally come to buy separated speakers and this receiver. I long read all the reviews and decided to buy once I was sure the price-performance relation was the one I was looking for. I have a pair of PSB Image T45, two Image B15 bookshelf speakers, the Image C40 center plus a pair of Alpha B1 and the Subseries 1 SW, which I consider a decent goodlooking nonexpensive set of speakers to match this receiver.
I haven't had the time to explore all the features, but once I plugged the speakers, out of the box, I had no problems. The PSBs sound far better than they sounded with the Onkyo SR667, which was pretty good for its own set of speakers, but lacked the deep and power to correctly fill the speakers. One other important thing is the 1910 never gets not even half as hot as the Onkyo.
I think the main thing this boy do is the main thing it should: amplify. Thus you get a clean and clear sound of it. The upconversion to 1080 is very fine, too, though I had no complaints with Faroudja.
This is a very very fine choice. It is no tricky sound you get out of it, no digital enhancements; you get sound, real sound. I highly recommend it.

I had an issue with the unit i received and they tried to resolve it over the phone till we determined it was in fact defective.
I was not impressed with the yamaha's power, functions and features.
The phone remote app works great and i am able to do everything i need to do.

Before i bought this receiver i had bought the yamaha aventage rx-a3080 9.
