The fatal flaw of this router is the fact that it’s CPU is not powerful enough to support gigabit or even half gig speeds. While it has gig ports on it, when I ran my speed tests from a variety of services, I would get my fully provisioned speed (450 mbps) for a few seconds of the speed test, then it would decline to 190 or so.
and now I’m back at 450 mbps… consistently, with no drop off. The China-based support on the TP-Link was terrible, as an aside, and had no idea what the issue was or how to solve it.
Ok, so after I initially set this up, I was frustrated for a day or so until I figured out what was going on.The router has been up for a couple of days now with now issues and I hope it continues this way.I had to install this in a wall panel, so I needed it to be able to work properly on power cycles without me going to the devices physically. As stated in the title, there are 2 things to be careful about for simple connections, like a home network in my case:
1) Ports 2, 3, and 4 can be configured as LAN (Local network) OR WAN (Internet) ports and I think, by default, ports 1 AND 2 are set for WAN. So if you hook your internet/external network connection up to Port 1 and then just assume you can connect a local computer up to Port 2 to manage configuration, you’re gonna have a bad time. For initial config, connect your internet to Port 1 and computer to Port 5 and then setup WAN/LAN configurable ports the way you need before reconnecting anything else.
2) Several others had issues with dropping the WAN (Internet) connection after less than an hour, it seems like this is because of the "Anti ARP Spoofing" firewall feature, which I think is also on by default and seems to be crap.Disable it and you should see WAN stability. I was getting extremely frustrated because my internet connection just seemed to keep dropping. My computer would state that they still had an ethernet connection but no internet.I’d be able to successfully reach and log in to the router and then I’d have to manually force a connection on the WAN (even if it said connected) and test pinging Google to see if it was actually connected. It would be up for 45-60 minutes then die out again. It would self-correct a lot of the time but it was frequent enough and lasted long enough that it impacted regular web surfing and listening to Pandora.I have WebPass (Google Fiber) and haven’t ever had connection drop issues, so I started playing with the configurations.Once I turned that one off, everything was working perfectly. There are additional settings to allow bound MAC addresses (which you can import automatically when you reserve them in DHCP), but I didn’t even want to test that.Just turn the functionality off and everything is good.
Otherwise, so far so good!Loses a star because those are on by default (if I remember correctly, could be wrong) and they caused serious headaches.
I got this to replace a Linksys WRT54GL running DD-WRT. I recently had 50+ MB cable internet installed as part of a T-W/Spectrum package, and the Linksys router couldn’t keep up speed-wise. It would only get about 35 MB throughput, and if I connected a computer directly to the cable modem I would see 61 MB speed (Spectrum was over performing in this case). I was wasting 25 MB of speed by using the Linksys router. After installing this router, I now see the full speed at my computer behind the router. Its setup was not at all complicated, as long as you have a working knowledge of networking. Some reviewers have complained about the setup process, but I did not find it a problem (but then again, I am pretty much a geek). The price is excellent for a router of this quality. My alternative was to convert an old PC into being a router, which would have provided plenty of speed, but that would have been more cumbersome space and power-wise. I can’t comment as to longevity at this point, but so far, so good.
I’ve been looking for a decent wired router for years.Basically we have ethernet cables run because where the cable comes in his a horrible place for wifi, so why not just separate the two?The problem I always run into is that most of them are either so pro focused (Ubiquiti) I can’t figure it out.Or they’re sot expensive, that it would make sense just to buy another mid tier wifi router, and turn the wifi off. This one was a nice balance.Simple enough, with the advanced features I was looking for.
Only real knocks: 1.They do not update the firmware very often… which makes me security nervous. 2. You can’t name (or have names show up for) the reserved IPs.Seriously, how hard is that? It’s not the end of the world, just make a spread sheet.Weirdly, for all of the DHCP clients, it has their names displayed.Maybe they figure it’s redundant? In any case, found that a bit annoying.
Overall though, I’m really impressed. No problems with uptime at all (at 6 months I moved some cords around, and that was the first time it got rebooted in months).Eventually, I’d like to dig into the VPN stuff a bit more… but I guess that’s for a future edit to this.

Amazon calculates a product’s star ratings based on a machine learned model instead of a raw data average. The model takes into account factors including the age of a rating, whether the ratings are from verified purchasers, and factors that establish reviewer trustworthiness.
It's a capable, set-and-forget router that does the usual:DHCP, NAT, port mapping, restricting client access (time of day, MAC address), basic firewall functions (dropping port mapping, stopping pings), etc.If not of that means anything to you, you can just do an automatic set up and forget about it.
Two drawbacks:
1)No reserved IP addresses for DHCP.That's a star and half off.I can't assign consistent IP addresses to things like my NAS boxes and printers, which is a pain.Bonjour solves most of that, but I still have to do MAC address lookups periodically to verify that no unauthorized devices are connected to my network.Same devices don't identify themselves by name (I'm looking at *you*, Amazon Echo).
2)I did have to restart it once in the three months I've had it.That was probably due to my ISP modem glitching on the WAN side, but it's still one more time than I had to restart my D-Link in over 12 years.Another half star reduction.
I bought this several months ago in hopes of replacing my wireless router. I bought an Eero wireless mesh system and it works so well there was no need for a "second" wireless signal from my existing wireless router. Every time I try to switch, I encounter a very frustrating problem. My cable modem instantly displays a flashing red light rather than its normal blue light. Needless to say, no internet signal gets sent to any other devices and I'm dead in the water. I've tried turning everything else off, rebooting the modem, computer, etc. - nothing works. As soon as I go back to my old wireless router, everything works perfectly again. It seemed like such a simple, inexpensive solution but there is nothing "plug and play" about it.
Bought another 2 of these guys based on info that hardwired routers are being phased out. I have a total of 4 of these routers now. 1 is active in use and 3 in reserve. There is a big push from big $$$ corps to get people on wireless routers and thus, the sheep follow. Then, you have wireless hacks who can spend a certain amount of money and buy equipment to penetrate wireless routers even with the most elaborate pass codes. The consequences can be extremely embarrassing. So; with that said, this unit is strictly hardwired and therefore there's no "oops" I bumped into the wi-fi button or "oops" the router did a reset when the power went out and a hack got in. Helps when dealing with potential wireless hacks. One more very, very inexpensive tool out of many to help defend against cyber attacks. Compatible with Cox's Premier Plan 100 meg and super fast. I am very happy ; )
Worked for several days trying to get it to connect to the wan port. Was able to get two different routers to work with little effort on the same network. It may just be bad. It cost less than twenty dollars and not worth sending it back. I just chalk it up to learning, and remember the name. When I installed it in the network, the network shut down. I changed my mind about keeping the router. Amazon made it so easy to return that I ordered a replacement. If the replacement works as advertised, I will write a proper review, or edit this one. (Edited review) Amazon sent a replacement router in a few days. It works great with a few simple steps to configure it. After having installed the new one without any problems, the first one may have been good too. I may have not understood the instructions. Anyway, Thanks Amazon.

TRENDnet has always made some very good routers, and this little router is no exception.I have used the same Linksys router for 10years and it was time to retire it.However, finding a quality wired router was very hard it turns out.In the end I stumbled across this router and began to do some research into it.
the TW100-S4W1CA is actually the 4th version of this router. It was originally produced in 2006 and went through multiple changes (v1.0v1.0rv1.1and v1.1r)v1.1r was produced in 2009 i believe and contains the latest firmware (Jan 2008)The original versions of this router had a different design and a blinking "red" status light. The latest version changed it to a blinking GREEN light.I received a v1.1r which is the latest (sometimes you might end up with a 1.1and some sites are even selling v1.0 originals which is very strange since Trendnet doesn't produce those anymore)
Anyhow, the router design itself is ultra simple. This is a $40 router normally so compared to a $80 linksys you will see some differences. The plastic casing is light weight and kind of feels fragile next to my old linksys w/ heady duty plastic or better yet, my netgear SPI firewall router(which broke in about a year) which has a metal case. However you aren't exactly throwing this thing around so for a device that sits on a counter, the light weight plastic design is helpful to keep it cool ; it just has this TOY look to it.The ports in the back are plastic w/ metal pins to hold the RJ45's in place.Simple but it works. The lights themselves are very simple and not over glaring (like the Gaming Routers from D-Link which actually can hurt your eyes if you look into them because of how bright they are).
A proper functioning v1.1rmodel will have a "solid green" power light."flashing green status""Green WAN light that flickers w/ activity"and the port w/ a network cable attached will be SOLID GREEN that flickers with activity.
FIRMWARE / SETUP -- TRENDnet routers use some of the best router firmware on the market. It is done by an outside company which specializes in networking firmware and software, and supposedly they are one of the best. The firmware is windows/OS based, meaning when you hook up the router and get going, input your router IP and it will have a browser based firmware which will be like surfing webpages. This keeps it very simple for people who aren't familiar with networking since it lets them put in help bars, extra tool tips and make things look much nicer. -- CABLE users this router works out of the box w/o even a need for setup .DSL users and others will require minor setup but this is easy as there are 2 setup methods
1. BASIC/QUICK.This setup is pretty much 4 steps.Time, Network IP, Network information, LAN settingsin other words, the router will ask you toset your time, select your ISP provider (cable, dsl, etc), input network information if required by your ISP, clone your MAC ID(required if your ISP only grants you 1 IP based on your PC's network card) ** I didn't have to clone my MAC ID for it to work, but my friend bought this same router and he had to so well, this is a case by case basis. If the router is not working out of the box, CLONE MAC ID in the quick setup step. After doing that the router worked perfect for my friend.
2. ADVANCED.This setup avoids all the steps.Instead you are taken to a setup page that has all the firmware tabs.WAN, LAN, SETUP, FIREWALL etcWithin each tab are options to use. This is for advanced users as tweaking a few things here can screw up stuff. However in the advanced setup menu you can go to LAN and change your router IP address, the IP ranges the router hands out, lease time etc.You also can set up DMZ, firewall features, port forwarding etc.Everything is well organized and help options are everywhere (it is so much similar than my old Linksys) ** In the FIREWALL option there is a feature called "BLOCK WAN IP"I personally would enable this.Basically this prevents the router from receiving "pings" on the WAN side (via your ISP).Now if you enable this and suddenly you lose internet then disable the option .Some ISP's do ping your network to make sure you are there. However most ISP's will not, instead HACKERS will ping along the network looking for a response.if you do not block your wan pings, you ping back and the hacker spots you and moves in for the kill.Is it necessary, no... but it is nice to have enabled.
OVERALL Short story here, this router is a fantastic wired router.I call it "the little router that could.... and then some"as this router is half the size of my old Linksys yet has 8x the throughput (80Mbps WAN to LAN).This router has a very simple design, with very high quality firmware that makes it very simple to setup while catering to advanced users.I highly recommend this router for its price (currently $24).While you will get a very cheap looking router, the insides are HIGH QUALITY. Just look past the toy design and you'll see this has some high quality parts inside of it and that's what counts in the end.It works... and it works well.
I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this router if you are looking for a high speed wired router that can handle multiple computers and devices.
CONS Like all great things, there are a few negatives to this router (minor ones) 1. Port 113CLOSED not stealth.STEALTH is just an imaginary term by GRC testing.Basically it means your port isn't visible or responding to outside data access that was not requested. Is this bad?Not really because this router contains "Block WAN PING".My Old Linksys and Netgear routers did not have Block WAN PING but did have Port 113 filter. So pretty much it isone or the other from the research I did.You can filter port 113 (make it stealth) or just have the router block all PING requests from the WAN side.
2. Setup CD.I get so annoyed with these.Honestly, these Setup CD's cause more problems than they resolve. In fact some CD's wont even work on Windows Vista or Windows 7 .These CD's are really designed for users with Windows 95, 98 and 2000 where you had to configure high speed internet manually.XP, Vista and Win7 all have automatic configuration wizards. You should not have to use the CD to get this to work if you are on XP, Vista or Win7 (UPnP is enabled by default)
Compact design with all the features of the expensive routers. For my basic network there was no need to go through hoops just plug and play and that's a big plus. I experienced an issue with the setup of my Home Network but with very little effort on my part TRENDnet solved all my issues and I have a faster and happy little workgroup once again. Through the TRENDnet.com Support website and Amazon's ask a question the response time and solving of my issue was super fast. THANK YOU TRENDnet for your expertise and ease of contacting for support.
Bought it because Mother works from home and I figured the best way to eliminate as may security holes is to physically eliminate the ones you can.
For whatever reason on Windows 10 I couldn't log-in to configure the router using Microsoft Edge, I entered the username and password like the users guide said to do but it just would not go.Had to use old Internet Explorer.

Bought this to replace a very old router that was only 10BaseT. Unit is very easy to set up but you must connect the router to BOTH your PC and the WAN before you can log in to the unit (when all else fails, follow the quick start instructions ;-). The other issue I encountered was that my old network was addressed in the range 192.168.0.nnn, whereas this router will only see LAN IP addresses in the range 192.168.10.nnn. I could initially not log in my wireless access point (i.e. NETGEAR Wireless Router)until I reconnected the old router, logged in and changed the static IP address to a value in the new range. Then, of course, the old router could not see the access point any more. When the new TRENDnet router was re-connected, I was then able to log in to the AP (whew!). Since both my old router and this router only allow 256 IP addresses, I expect most home routers would have similar issues Once set up, this router has been working flawlessly. Another nice thing is this router has slots in the bottom so you can wall mount the unit.
This is an outdated product and should not have been sold: will not upgrade date past 2016, so useless. Power converter kept failing as well. I would have to pay return shipping so I just tossed it.

Purchased for a project that ended up going in a different route, but product worked great. Would definitely recommend this router to anyone looking specifically for a non-wireless AP.
